I'm a full stack developer and amateur designer.

Hi there, thanks for visiting my personal website! Read on below to learn more about my experience, and shoot me an email at segheysens@gmail.com if you want to get in touch. I’ve realized that building a solution isn’t the challenge, but engineering an experience is. I love a good challenge, and get a thrill from learning new things - that’s why I became a developer.

Founder, CTO, COO, CMO, Brand Advocate, etc

January 2017 - Present

I have a confession to make. I've always loved playing video games. The animations, the artwork, the sounds and musical score, all constrained by the hardware and software - they're an amazing medium and I applaud all development studios who make them. But this love of gaming and the community behind it brought me to the idea of GamerTrainer - a platform for receiving 1-on-1 video game lessons from pro gamers. Check it out here to learn more or to take a lesson!

So how did I get here?

Previous Work Experience

Frontier Strategy Group

Software Engineer

October 2016 - May 2017

I was recently a software engineer for full stack web development at Frontier Strategy Group. FSG provides solutions for customers entering or growing in emerging markets, through industry-leading economic consulting, data and technology. I helped engineer and improve the FrontierView platform with a small, but tenacious development team.

New Signature

Mobile/Data Analytics Developer

January 2016 - September 2016

At New Signature, I was a data analytics developer in company's new Advanced Analytics practice, writing applications primarily in Python and C#. With several teammates, I planned and developed data pipelines that integrated with Azure services including the Azure IoT Suite, Azure SQL Server, Azure Data Warehouse, Azure Machine Learning, and Microsoft's Hadoop ecosystem, Azure HDInsight. My last project had me working with a team at Hershey's. I was the technical lead helping to design and implement a machine learning algorithm that saved the company money on Twizzler production - it even got featured by CNBC and Business Insider.

Prior to the data analytics role, I was a member of New Signature's mobile development team, which creates business value-driven mobile apps. We used the Xamarin platform for deploying applications to iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. I was a junior application developer on this team, having recently transitioned from full stack web development.

New Signature

Junior Full Stack Developer;

September 2015 - January 2016

As a junior full stack developer on the the Application Platform team, I supported frontend-backend integrations, updated retainer client web applications, and researched new technologies that would give our projects that extra shine. I’ve always had a knack for business, so I also contributed to improving team processes and documentation.

General Assembly

Web Dev Immersive Student

July 2015 - September 2015

At General Assembly, I completed a full-stack web development program focused on common best practices in object-oriented programming, MVC frameworks, data modeling, and test-driven development. I developed a portfolio of individual and collaborative projects, including:

  • FantasyTrader - my final project, FantasyTrader was a new fantasy sports game that allowed users to buy "shares" of athletes, and treat the game like taking on the stock market. It was built using Mongo, Express, Backbone, and Node.js.
  • Artbox - a team-based project that resulted in a small Ruby-on-Rails application. The app gives users a resource to look up artwork that is available in the public domain - something that hadn't existed at the time.
  • Bewze - my very first Ruby-on-Rails application, which serves as a repository for alcoholic beverage pricing data. This was my first time utilizing AJAX calls, before learning about them in class.
  • Blackjack - my first project was a simple, frontend-only blackjack game. I just spruced it up as of February 2016. Find out more under my Side Projects.

New Signature

Associate IT Consultant

July 2014 - June 2015

As a consultant at New Signature, I provided the best customer experience possible in a variety of IT environments, while using tested, cutting edge technology. I evaluated business processes with our clients’ stakeholders, provide strategic guidance and develop strategic plans for our customers’ technology requirements. Windows Server, Office 365, and Exchange were some of my areas of concentration, but I supported numerous technologies at various client requests.

University of Maryland

B.A. in Economics
Minor in Tech Entrepreneurship

September 2010 - December 2014

The University of Maryland, College Park was my home from 2010-2014. I majored in Computer Science through my junior year, but ultimately switched to pursue a degree in Economics. I was a student in the inaugural class of the nationally-recognized Honors Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (HEIP) during my first two years, and then Hinman CEOs as an upperclassman. When I wasn’t taking classes, I was able to experience an environment that was substantially more diverse than where I had grown up, and it broadened my perspective immensely. My involvement in Student Entertainment Events (SEE) and Alpha Sigma Phi shaped my college experience into an amazing four years, and I’d be happy to tell you more about them if you are curious!

About Me

from Pittsgrove, NJ

Technology Enthusiast

April 1992 - Current

I grew up in a small town in southern New Jersey, but have always had my sights set on making a big impact. Growing up in a household with two accountants (both parents), I had a natural inclination towards business and I’ve been interested in programming since my first high school CS class. Outside of work, I enjoy almost anything that involves the outdoors, watching Philadelphia sports teams, and planning my next opportunity to travel.
